It may seem a bit gimmicky, but I decided when Verizon dropped the price of the R2D2 edition droid 2 to 99.99 with a 2 year contract, that is was the sweet spot, especially since it includes a decent pair of stereo headphones and a customized dock. Similar docks retail for 30.00 so I really think it’s a great buy.
Out of the box:
Setup was easy as it had been with my prior LG Ally. The 1 Ghz processor and separate video processor make all the difference here. Motorola once again does not skimp on performance just to save on cost. It has the usual widgets but many individual and exclusive widgets I preferred such as the one touch wifi and GPS activation. This star wars flavored version comes with the best of R2D2 video on it. In addition there are several unique star wars themed wallpapers to choose from. There are also plent of Artoo bleeps and screams to choose from for your ringtones and alert sounds.
First impressions:
I downloaded all the standard apps, Advanced Task Killer and Lookout for my performance and virus protection needs. The phone can run any app I throw at it like a champ. No stutters or slowdowns. This truly is a flagship phone from Motorola. It is really easy to see why the Motorola Droid has endured as one of the most successful models. I still like the physical keyboard. My wife got a droid X and while I love the large screen real estate on it, there is still something great about having the physical typing experience.
Final thoughts:
It is really a great buy at 99.99 and for the true star wars fan, you will appreciate the extra little touches on this phone, aimed at channeling your inner sci-fi nerd. Currently it stands at 100.00 cheaper than its currently available counterpart the droid 2 global. So if you don’t need the capability of world roaming and still prefer the physical keyboard, this is the Droid for you.
